A “Green” Christmas Stocking
A local store has challenged Salt Spring Artists to create ‘Green’ Christmas stockings to be auctioned off to support the Salt Spring Conservancy.
So, I took some denim jeans (that were no longer suitable for wearing – not even for the thrift store) and cut them into strips to weave with. I also put in some bits and pieces from my treasure baskets (aka weaving thrums – leftovers that would often get thrown away) to add some colour and texture.
Here is the weaving as it was progressing…
I have also saved the pockets to attach them to the stocking…
So, I had the (very heavy) pieces of cloth for the leg of the stocking, but what to do about the toe?
One day I was at the local thrift store with my cousin and she found a red hat with tassels – perfect size and great colour for the toe…
I added a crocheted red heel to match, removed the tassels from the hat to use as a stocking hanger at the top, added some bells from old Christmas gifts and decorations that I had saved and here it is completed…

I just love it! And it makes me smile on this gray Seattle day.
Thanks so much Holly! 🙂
Happy Weaving,

oh that is awesome. I think I might steal the denim strips + thrums idea for a floor rug. You are so creative Terri.
Thanks Taueret!
It certainly would be heavy enough for a rug – it is one heavy stocking! I’d love to see photos of your rug when you’re done…
Happy Weaving,

That is a wonderfullly ‘green’ stocking! A lovely gift to the Earth!
Hopefully it will help to raise some money to contribute to the conservancy – doing wonderful work to save the earth!
Happy Weaving,
Terri
Happy New Year! Terri.
Yes, I am busy both weaving (getting ready for the show soon!) and holiday stuff. We are having a Japanese friend who is here alone for the New Year’s Eve and New Year.
I really love your green stocking! I don’t make stockings, but I make a purse using jeans I buy at garage sales. I will show some images later.
My friend and I are thinking about making something ‘green’ next year!
Let’s exchange green ideas!
I am in Minnesota, so of course we have snow!
I hope to see you in 2009, too.
Oh, Brenda wants to visit you as Studio “FUN” tour. We’ll see…
And Happy New Year Chiaki!
I wouldn’t normally make stockings, but this was for a Christmas fundraiser and so it was fun to try something new. The stocking was auctioned off and raised some money for the nature conservancy here on Salt Spring – so I’m very happy about that.
Yes – it would be fun to exchange ‘green’ ideas and so wonderful if you come to Salt Spring for a Studio “Fun” tour…..
Happy Weaving,
Terri 🙂
