Contemporary Textiles – Voice in Three Strands (photos)

Here are some photos of the Peace Banners from the exhibit at ArtCraft ….

I was asked to fill the center of the stage with two Peace Banners as the other textile pieces were hanging on the surrounding walls. It was to be an interactive piece where people could walk in and around the banners. I brought one of my Saori looms so that it looks like the banner is coming off the loom.

It would have been great to make it really interactive and let people weave – but that couldn’t happen at this exhibit…

Here’s the view of the banners (and me wearing one of my Khatas for Peace). In the back right there are a few of my other weavings – I will need to get some photos of those for another post…

Both Peace Banners were made on Salt Spring by over 150 people contributing to the weaving of them. One of the banners went to Hiroshima for Saori Peace Weave 2007 and the other was woven at our Fall Fair and on International Peace Day (September 21).

Through the banners you can see some of the other textile works at the back…

It was very exciting to be part of this exhibit and the opening was fun….it was interesting to hear people’s comments and to talk to the other artists.

Shannon Wardroper (whose work is being looked at closely in the picture above) lived in Japan for a time and actually was at the Osaka Saori studio and was introduced to Saori Weaving. Her textiles use some Japanese silks…so that was an interesting connection that neither of us knew about before.  More possibilities!

Happy Weaving,

Terri
