Last week, two young girls joined in on my weaving class. They have done a lot of weaving with me over the past few years – but not since last summer. It was fun to have them in the studio again.
They got right back into the weaving and had a plan to make bags – so I invited them back this week to do some more weaving so they would have enough fabric for what they wanted to make.
They liked the “Doni’s Deli” bag – here which I have used before. But they also liked the idea of a lined bag – lined with denim – like one that I made – here.
I love that they just wanted to ‘go for it’ and make them up – so we did that yesterday!
This one lined with the top part of a pair of jeans turned inside out…
This one lined with pieces of the leg sewn together…
With my finished blue yardage, I was thinking that I might make a jacket.
When I took it out to the studio to drape it on the dress form, try it this way and that, I wasn’t sure. It decided to be a top rather than a jacket.

I am so happy with it – it really feels like “me”!! It was the first time I have made long sleeves and I like how that worked out too. It will be a warm top with the wool, silk, silk fabric strips and the handspun wool in it – but also not too heavy as the warp is mainly cottons.

Well, jumping all over here with my weaving – I’ve just completed working on a belt. This is from a warp that I set up in June for weaving with children at a local school. They wanted a ‘make and take’ project and so I set up two warps – one in greens, one in blues and took along some thick yarns so that they could complete a bookmark, or wrist band and some even made an ankle band. It was a lot of fun. They finished the whole green warp (10 metres) and some of the blue one.
I didn’t get any photos on the day, but one of my students decided she wanted to make some wrist bands with some of the leftover warp…
The rest of the warp has been waiting around for me to do something with (one of the great things about the Saori looms is that a project can come off the loom still threaded and ready to go on an “inside set”)….
So, first I decided to weave a belt. I gathered some yarns …
… plus bits and pieces from my Treasure Basket and started weaving them in. I was thinking of Chiaki’s Treasure belts and of Guatemalan belts I’ve seen (though I used my favourite blues palette to go with my blue jeans).
Here’s what it looks like
And the belt is done! Well, actually, I’m not really happy with the buckle so I’ll probably change that…
I still have a lot of warp left and so I’m making a bag handle right now, and then, well, I’m not quite sure yet – might play around with the tie pattern from the “Self Discovery” book.
