I just got back from a quick trip to Edmonton for my mom’s St. Patrick’s Day birthday! It was great to spend some time with my parents and also to see Tom & Tanya.
My mom and I wove a scarf together for her birthday…
It was definitely winter in Alberta. A lot of the snow had melted and the roads were dry when I arrived, but by the time I left…
I think it snowed every day! Good thing I keep my warm winter coat there.
While I was in Edmonton I wove a springtime daffodil scarf…
The warp is a bright green and yellow cotton that I purchased when I was in Argentina quite a few years ago…
When I was winding the warp, I tried to keep the colours together a bit to get an Ikat effect…
Lynn came over last Saturday and we spent the morning in the studio playing with SAORI necklaces. We put on very narrow warps and had fun making these skinny, skinny scarves – SAORI necklaces.
I also tried making a mini-mobius necklace which was fun.
It opens up more possibilities and such fun and experimental accessories to make. What do you think?

When my mom was visiting, she made a beautiful warp with blues, greens and whites…
She chose her yarns to weave into the scarf, including a Magic Ball from BeSweet Yarns…
When she made the warp, it was long enough for two scarves and so I wove the second one. I wove with a combination of a green variegated silk, with a blue wool/silk blend. I also used pieces left from the Magic Ball to reflect the weaving in my mom’s scarf…
And here they are side-by-side. I put mine in the dryer for a bit which made it crinkle and shrink, so it is now narrower.
Some time ago I wove a length of cloth and wasn’t sure what it might become. I had it hanging in my studio for quite a while – a skirt? a coat? a vest? I was never sure and so it waited…
I just went back in my posts to see when I was working on it – I cannot believe that it was over a year ago! Here is my original post – thanks for ‘staying tuned’ for so long!
Inspired by a pattern that I saw in one of the SAORI reports, I tried it out – a very simple design.
The front…
The back…
On the back, I had planned to cut the extra cloth off to use for something else and make the edge into a collar. However, when I had my class yesterday I was showing the design and how it would look and everyone thought that the ‘extra’ cloth could become a built in scarf. So I tried it that way….
And just wrapped it around this way…
And that way…
And so now it is done. No cutting and only 2 simple seams – it could even be easily sewn by hand.
And so a new Saori top – in my favourite colours 🙂

This year our Fall Fair theme was “Green and Growing” and so I put on a green warp for the public weaving at the fair (see photos here). With the last bit of the warp, I wove a green SAORI-style mobius scarf. It has become a current favourite!
Lately, I have been leaving spaces in my weaving – as a metaphor – a touchstone – to remind me to leave space in my life (see my previous post).
I just got back from a trip to Edmonton to visit family & friends and set up a warp for my mom to weave…
She decided to try weaving with space too…lots of it!
As she was weaving, my dad looked over from the couch and said ‘It doesn’t look any different than the warp that just went on. Are you weaving?’. This made me think of the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes (in case you don’t know the story – it’s worth a read) and we laughed!
And decided to call this ‘The Emperor’s New Scarf’…
I love the way the warp has shifted and moved and the drape of the scarf is amazing. A nice summer weight scarf…
