A Christmas Day Walk

Yesterday we had a lovely and quiet day. Lots of phone calls to and from family and dear friends near & far.

We decided to take a thermos of tea and some Christmas goodies and go for a walk to enjoy our beautiful island. We chose the Burgoyne Bay walk. Here are the boats in the bay…

The walk is an easy and beautiful path…

Candy Cane Mobius

This morning I made a Candy Cane mobius scarf on a narrow Christmas warp that I had on one of my studio looms.

A Red SAORI top…

Just in time for Christmas…

Lynn came by last week and we always have fun doing a show and tell (a mini SAORI Kai!). Lynn brought a fabulous new top that she made…

I loved the colours, of course, and it was so comfortable to wear that I didn’t want to give it back. Well, the next best thing was examining how she made it, and with her help and hints making one of my own!

I just happened to have this fabric that last year had been hanging in my house – now ready for some clothing 🙂

The pattern is from the Self Innovation book and is very easy to make. My fabric was narrower than the pattern called for, so I cut one length of fabric down the middle lengthwise and added it to the edge of the fabric to make it wider before beginning the construction.

Christmas Ruffle Scarf

We had a staff Christmas party last weekend and so I decided to weave a quick scarf to wear to it. I have a skirt that is black with a shiny turquoise/green section to it so thought I would coordinate with that.

I put a narrow 50-thread black cotton pre-wound warp on the loom and wove the scarf with a black yarn that has a green sparkle thread through it.

When I was weaving it, I wove very loosely, either barely beating the yarn into place or much of the time not even using the beater. It gives it an open & lacy look.

After weaving, I pulled three threads in the centre to create the ruffle (this is another reason to weave loosely so that the threads are easily pulled). Then I twisted the fringe, washed it and wore it to the party that night.

Just a note – when you weave the length of the scarf, be sure that you make it longer than the finished length you want it to be, as it shortens when you pull the threads to make the ruffle.

The scarf is featured on the Weavolution Facebook page – here.

Saori Christmas Cards

Need a quick Christmas card?   These cards were made from a piece of weaving and a blank card with a cut-out…

Saori Christmas Cards

…and here are the steps:

  • apply some iron-on interfacing to the back of a weaving
  • get some cards with cut-outs (these had plain rectangles – but other shapes are available)
  • cut out a piece of weaving that extends in all directions beyond the opening
  • put glue onto the card and press the weaving in
  • glue the card flap closed and place under some heavy books to weight it down until the glue is dry (note that these cards have an extra flap that goes behind the weaving – the card still does have an inside!)

Put in a lovely message and give to your family friends for Christmas – or any occassion – change the weaving, change the occassion – try Wedding invitations or thank yous, birthday cards, other gift cards, etc…

Salt Spring Saori Studio

My Family Comes to Visit & Weave

At the beginning of December, Salt Spring Island has many Christmas craft sales and events. My family enjoys coming out to enjoy a ‘girls getaway & Christmas craft sale-ing’ week – this was the 3rd annual event! We always have a great time…

Christmas weaving

Of course, weaving in the Saori Salt Spring Studio is a big part of the week and some lovely things were woven. This was definitely the year of the MOBIUS…
