Saori Weaving in Hawaii
It’s always so inspiring to meet with other Saori weavers and this was certainly no exception! I just got back from 5 days in Hawaii where I attended a Saori workshop hosted at the University of Hawaii by VSA Hawaii-Pacific and Saori no Mori.
There were four people from Saori no Mori – Kenzo Jo and his son Naoto and also two women – Masako and Michiko who have been weaving for many years.
The workshop was two very full days and we learned so much! Making new yarns, using the bobbin winder as a spinning wheel…
Kenzo demonstrating
Michiko helping mom
and the effects of different spinning and thicknesses after weaving it…
New techniques of weaving…
We also saw many great samples from Japan…comb reed effect…
clothing…
We also had a clothing workshop the second day. We learned many shortcuts and ways to make things easier to sew, various seam techniques and then we did lots of origami paper folding for the different designs…
And we had such great time meeting people, and being inspired!

Hawaii itself was a beautiful, warm, sunny setting and it was so fabulous to be able to make the trip with my mom…
And yesterday back home to Salt Spring Island and different beaches…
…island peace and tranquility
Happy Weaving,
Terri

Sounds like paradise. Cant wait to see the new designs you come up with after your inspiration in Hawaii.

It looks like an amazing workshop. Can’t wait to have another Saori Kai and hear all about it. Maybe another clothing workshop too…..
It was paradise Chris – and inspiration for sure! Felt so lucky to be able to go…
Gotta get weaving!
Happy Weaving,
Terri
Yes, I’d love to have another Saori Kai – I’ll talk to Marie & Stephanie and see if we can find a suitable date. Many new ideas for clothing design – I’ll create some and see what we can plan….
Happy Weaving,
Terri
Oh wow! The photos are sooooooooo inspiring! I love the comb effects and the ‘brickwork’ of the rose colored piece. Also, just love the ruffled piece!
Total magic!
Wheee!
I liked the mosaic aspects of this post: the new ideas (a bobbin winder/spinning wheel – ?! and new weaving techniques), the origami design clothing, your Mom, Hawaii/Saltspring beaches/climate. And another Saori Kai sounds like a great idea.
