We were able to spend quite a lot of time at both Saori Hiroba and Saori no Mori in Osaka. We learned lots of new things and were very inspired. I didn’t take so many pictures though – but here are a few.

First some inspirational clothing from an exhibit…

Some weaving with the comb reed – love those curving lines! This is something we learned more about at the studio.

Laura’s scarf she made using the comb reed and also some stretchy yarns! Fun!!

The timing for our trip was wonderful in many ways. We happened to be in Japan and in Osaka for the celebration of Misao-sensei’s 97th birthday – what an honour to be there to celebrate with her.

We went to the Nakatsu studio along with about 50 other people and enjoyed music…

…puppet shows and speeches (even though they were all in Japanese)…

and an impromptu fashion show – by all the attendees!

We were able to meet Misao-sensei and talk to her, with the help of translators…

I have just returned from an amazing two week trip to Japan with my friend Laura. We had an wonder-full time! Exploring Saori, celebrating Misao-sensei’s 97th birthday, meeting friends and new people and getting to know some of the wonderful Saori people at the studios!

I was planning to go last October/November (2009) for the 40th anniversary of Saori, but because of health reasons was unable to. My tickets expired at the end of April and so we planned this trip – and I was so excited to be able to go!

Over the next while I will be posting pictures, thoughts and reflections on my trip to Japan – I hope you enjoy them.

Laura and I arrived quite weary from travel to the airport in Tokyo where we took a “tourist shot” of our arrival. We then continued on to Osaka and got to our hotel.

Welcome to Japan

Next to get some dinner – well that was an experience, but luckily most of the restaurants have plastic food samples outside to show what is on the menu, so we were able to point and ask for what we wanted.

The next day we jumped right into Saori weaving. We met Marie

Laura & Marie

…and she took us to Suyoko-san’s studio

Suyoko

Suyo Atelier

… where we enjoyed meeting weavers in her classes, having tea with them and seeing their creations.

We also enjoyed a wonderful family style dinner and tried some of Osaka’s specialty – takoyaki (octopus balls).

Stay tuned – lots more to come!
