Here is the Blossom Banner woven at the Salt Spring Island Blossom Festival. (See my previous post of the weaving of the banner here.)
I had planned to sew the cloth blossoms onto the banner, but after putting a few on, it just didn’t seem right. So, change of plan and I threaded the blossoms onto some string and hung them from the edges of the banner. I like how it turned out…
Here are the close-ups of the blossoms on the banner…
So many people sending their thoughts and prayers with this banner to Sendai, Japan. It heads out tomorrow – going to the Sendai Saori Studio. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible and to everyone who contributed through their weaving, their help, their blossoms and their blessings.
And here’s our blossoms today with the leaves coming out…

The fourth in my series “The Directions” is North / Red. It was interesting to gather up the yarns that I would use for this direction and realize that I didn’t have a lot of variety in the reds. Well, of course that meant I needed to go yarn shopping – not a hardship 🙂
Here is the beginning of the North banner…
North / Red / Cleansing north winds, winter, elders
Hoping to have it done this next week. I’ll keep you posted!
I have started on my next banner from the series “The Directions”. This one for the south – white.
The south of my understanding represents a time of Youth and also has many other meanings. I know many cultures have different colours and meanings for the directions and I continue to explore through my weavings the teachings that I have received.
My white/south weaving seems to have developed a landscape of it’s own.
I hope to finish it later this week and post some photos of the completed banner.
I have been invited to create a banner for an exhibit in New York City!
The idea is to have banners hung from the ceiling like a waterfall. Each banner will be a minimum of 6 metres long. The exhibit will be in a gallery and there will be dance performances held under the ‘waterfall’ of banners.
Wow – I’m excited to be part of this. The time is short, as the exhibit opens on March 1 and I have just been working on preparing the warp and will be starting to weave.
Here’s the warp colours – I have decided to take the ‘Waterfall’ idea and create the banner with a blue water warp – not sure yet where the weaving will go as that will evolve as I weave.
And some of the weaving so far ….
This part reminds me of the ‘Tide Tables’. As we live on an island, we are more aware of the tides, looking for chances to walk along the beach at low tide, etc.
Each part seems to be evolving with different yarns, different feelings, different parts of the ‘waterfall’…
Jenny wove this amazing Chakra cloth in just one week. She took all of the colours and textures she had for each of the chakra colours – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (same as the rainbow colours) and wove a section of each one. It is so amazing – I love it!
She brought it to the studio today and I just took some quick snapshots. They at least show some of the variation in the materials and colour – but I wish I had a great photo of the whole thing….
There are many things written about the chakras and meanings. But since this is not my work, I won’t expand on them here.
Red -1st chakra
Orange – 2nd chakra
Yellow – 3rd chakra
Green – 4th chakra
Blue – 5th chakra, Indigo – 6th chakra
Violet – 7th chakra
My apologies for having some of these photos of the piece with the colours going the wrong way. I had to hang it from my rafters to be able to take the photos…so I would have liked it from Red at the bottom to the violet at the top…but I hope you get the idea!
It is great to see this. I have been doing rainbow warps for a lot of the Peace Banners and this shows the Rainbow or Chakra colours as the weft (on a black warp).

I have been very lucky to have a banner woven by Misao Jo (the founder of Saori weaving) at my studio for the past while. Misao Jo is now 95 and still teaches and weaves every day!
(This is the poster that came with the banner. I had it in my window with the Big Leaf Maple in the background. If you look at the photo, you will see Misao-sensei way in the back with her long banner rolled out in front of her. )
I have had the banner hanging in my studio draped on the open beams. It goes from one end of the studio to the other – and back again!
It has inspired me and many people with the colours, the texture and the energy! There are areas in the banner that are woven so loosely – and seeing this, many of my students have tried it and loved it. That is part of the ‘learning from each other’ that is so wonderful.
Thank you so much Misao-sensei! We are very grateful to have had the banner here at the studio – it has been our pleasure and honour!
I will now be sending it off to it’s next studio for a visit there.
