AiR – now day 15…

The Artist in Residence days have been floating and flying by. I just had 4 wonderful mornings in the studio with people here to learn and to share – I love that so much!

Today was a quiet day doing some weaving in the studio. On Monday, I had been showing one of the weavers how to put on a pre-wound warp and we started putting on the conference silk warp – how luscious! I finished putting it on and started the weaving – so far just using silk as weft too…

Also today, I went to see the new Yarn Shop on Salt Spring – Elderberry Yarns – for their Grand Opening day…

…they have “Handspun, hand dyed, locally made, locally grown, fair trade, luxury and quality yarns, fibres and accessories from around the world for knitting, crochet, felting, spinning,
embroidery and leatherwork
” – nice!

and I stopped at the Gulf Islands Spinning Mill to drop off my fleece for washing.

I could get used to this 🙂

Spinning & Weaving Week

October 3 – 9 is spinning and weaving week…

Spinning & Weaving Week

This is my recent spinning….

spinning

This past weekend the Salt Spring Weavers and Spinners Guild had their annual sale and I had a SAORI weaving workshop in Victoria. This week I have two classes coming up, plus some weaving and spinning to work on myself.

I’ll do another post with things I work on during the week.

What are you spinning or weaving this week?

Fall Fairs

I love fall. It always feels like the new year to me, getting back to schedules, school for some, fall harvests and so on. In celebration of the season, one of my favourite things on Salt Spring is the Salt Spring Fall Fair – a chance to connect and enjoy the community, friendships and abundance.

The Salt Spring Weaver’s and Spinners guild always has a display and items can be entered into the show. My SAORI loom is always there for people to try out…

This year’s theme of the Fair was ‘Green and Growing’. Here is Jane’s SAORI multi-media entry into the fair…

Aya made a bag for carrying her yoga mat…

I did some spinning this year – something that I had dabbled in off and on – but inspired by Kristen and Carmen and Elaine (who taught me to use a drop spindle when she was here for a weaving retreat) – I have done more spinning this year…(and won a first prize ribbon!)

Fall Fair

Next, it was off to the Fairfield Community Fall Fair in Victoria. Again, the SAORI loom came along and Lynn helped with the hands-on demo, Claudia was doing some spinning, Karen some crochet and Bob was making buttons…

Spinning on the ferry

Today was another travel day!! I went over to Duncan to Studio G Art for a meeting of the Vancouver Island Surface Design Association (a chapter of the Surface Design Association – a much larger group). We are planning a couple of shows – one in August (Ladysmith) and one in November (Cedar Hill, Victoria) which I’m excited about.

So, another ferry trip. Often my ’emergency kit’ for the car is crochet. However, not so long ago, Elaine was here for a weaving retreat and we were talking about spinning. I have never had, or rather made, the time to do a lot of spinning. She suggested taking a drop spindle in my ’emergency kit’, saying it is amazing how much spinning can get done – a bit at a time.

Well, then I had to say I had never really been able really do the drop-spindle spinning. It literally was a DROP spindle!! So, she shared with me some tips and tricks and on my last two ferry rides, I have taken my new spindle (purchased on a recent trip to Knotty by Nature) with me and have spun about 4 bobbins worth of thick and thin Saori-style yarn!!

So take some gorgeous fibre…

A Vancouver trip

I had a quick trip to Vancouver this week for a SAORI workshop at a women’s centre in the downtown eastside. It was great to be there and to meet the women. They enjoyed the weaving and created two banners that will be displayed at the centre. Sorry I couldn’t take any photos – but perhaps once they install the banners, I can get a photo of that.

Thanks to Felix for organizing the workshop and to Anik for helping out!

After the workshop, I got a chance to stop in at MelonHeadKnitwear‘s studio to pick up one of her Project 355 yarns that she spun. Wow – gorgeous yarns – a whole wall full of them. I bought number 232 – Gentle Tides! And then there were two bonus yarns – Storm and Robin’s nest! Love the yarns, love the names, loved being at the studio! I also got to meet Kristen, who was knitting away on a sock – using the two circular needle method – I’d love to learn how to do that!

I can’t believe that I didn’t take any photos of the studio – too much to talk about and share I guess. More talk about a Fibreshed too!

A late ferry home to Salt Spring Island.

Ruckle Park and Weaving an Earth Banner

On Sunday I went down to Ruckle Park on Salt Spring Island for “Ruckle Park Days”. The weather was beautiful and it was a marvelous day.

The 4Hers were there with their animals…
