Announcing – Summer Saori Weaving Camps

This summer I am going to be offering 4 weaving camps at my studio. These will run Mon-Wed from 10-Noon on the following dates:

July 7-9
July 28-30
August 11-13
August 18-20

These will give children, youth or adults a chance to explore Saori weaving. You can weave just for fun and exploration or make a project such as a belt, scarf, bag or more – the possibilities are endless.

Studio afternoon with Kobe students

Last week the studio was abuzz with music from Japan and Saori weaving. Four students from Kobe, Japan and another International Education student from Japan visited the studio for an afternoon.

The studio was set up and ready to go ….

Saori Salt Spring

Each of the students had a chance to weave on the Earth/Peace banner that will be going to Sendai Japan for ‘Saori Peace Weave 2008’ (pictures soon as it will be completed this week). And then they each wove a scarf for themselves to take with them.

Beautiful Yarns – a gift

This week I received an amazing gift package in the mail from Therese at JumpSheep. Thank you so much!

Yarns - a gift package

The yarns were spun by Amina and they are gorgeous…

Handspun Yarn - from France

… they look like Saori Freestyle Spinning! And I’m looking forward to working with them.  I’m not sure what I’ll make yet or whether I will do some Saori weaving with them, or knit with them, or ?? as always, the possibilities are endless…

Also in the gift package is an adorable pair of earrings

Saori Weaving & Tea Time

Whenever I have a Saori class at my studio I like to have a tea break and serve a cuppa….now, not everyone takes a break, but the tea is always on.

And so I decided that I would like to have a tea cloth to place the pot and the cups onto. The warp is black cotton (one of the Saori pre-wound warps) and the weft is a thick cotton (8/8) with a thin variegated tencel and then bits and pieces of other weavings for shots of colour from the treasure basket.

Ruckle Park and Weaving an Earth Banner

On Sunday I went down to Ruckle Park on Salt Spring Island for “Ruckle Park Days”. The weather was beautiful and it was a marvelous day.

The 4Hers were there with their animals…

4H animals

of many sorts…

There were nails to be pounded

logs to be sawed

butter to be churned

sheep to be herded

wool to spin and to weave

Saori weaving founder turns 95 …

Misao Jo is the founder of Saori weaving and has been weaving every day for over 40 years. In Japan they just celebrated her 95th birthday with a BBQ and an exhibition of some of her works.

You can see more information about her birthday exhibition here (under ‘What’s New’ click on Gallery and then the entry at the top about Misao Jo) and her birthday celebration here.

She still weaves every day and shares Saori weaving with others.  What an inspiration!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Weaving!

Earth Day – Weaving an Earth Banner

Happy Earth Day!

On Salt Spring Island, we had some celebrations on Sunday for Earth Day.

At one of the events I was invited to bring my Saori loom so that we could start weaving an ‘Earth Banner’.

I set up the warp using greens & browns and naturals and took my loom to the celebration.

Of course, the Raging Grannies were there to sing about what we can do to reduce our impact on the earth.

The children always love to come and try out some Saori weaving …

And many people added their threads to the Earth Banner.

Next stop – Ruckle Day on May 4 …. where the banner will continue
as we celebrate spring and the planting of new crops at the Ruckle Farm on Salt Spring Island.

Happy Earth Day … and Happy Weaving,
Terri
