Remembering Misao Jo

On January 10, 2018, Misao Jo sensei passed away peacefully. She was 104, with her 105th birthday just a few months away.

Misao has inspired so many through the SAORI philosophy and her passion for it. At 57 she embarked on a journey that will carry on through her family and so many others.

I had the great honour to meet her in Japan many times on my trips. I will think of her as I weave and share SAORI and do my best to help others know the joy of this beautiful philosophy.

Love, prayers and blessings to her family. She will be greatly missed.

SAORI weaving is based on a philosophy started in Japan by Misao Jo in 1969.

“All flowers are beautiful, even though each individual flower is different in form and color.  Because of this difference, “all are good”.  Because everything has the same life, life cannot be measured by a yardstick.  It is this individuality that makes everything meaningful and the uniqueness of each thread that creates the tapestry of life.”

Misao Jo’s 97th birthday celebration

The timing for our trip was wonderful in many ways. We happened to be in Japan and in Osaka for the celebration of Misao-sensei’s 97th birthday – what an honour to be there to celebrate with her.

We went to the Nakatsu studio along with about 50 other people and enjoyed music…

…puppet shows and speeches (even though they were all in Japanese)…

and an impromptu fashion show – by all the attendees!

We were able to meet Misao-sensei and talk to her, with the help of translators…

Misao Jo’s Banner

I have been very lucky to have a banner woven by Misao Jo (the founder of Saori weaving) at my studio for the past while. Misao Jo is now 95 and still teaches and weaves every day!

(This is the poster that came with the banner. I had it in my window with the Big Leaf Maple in the background. If you look at the photo, you will see Misao-sensei way in the back with her long banner rolled out in front of her. )

I have had the banner hanging in my studio draped on the open beams. It goes from one end of the studio to the other – and back again!

It has inspired me and many people with the colours, the texture and the energy!  There are areas in the banner that are woven so loosely – and seeing this, many of my students have tried it and loved it. That is part of the ‘learning from each other’ that is so wonderful.

Thank you so much Misao-sensei! We are very grateful to have had the banner here at the studio – it has been our pleasure and honour!

I will now be sending it off to it’s next studio for a visit there.

Happy Weaving,

Terri

Saori weaving founder turns 95 …

Misao Jo is the founder of Saori weaving and has been weaving every day for over 40 years. In Japan they just celebrated her 95th birthday with a BBQ and an exhibition of some of her works.

You can see more information about her birthday exhibition here (under ‘What’s New’ click on Gallery and then the entry at the top about Misao Jo) and her birthday celebration here.

She still weaves every day and shares Saori weaving with others.  What an inspiration!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Weaving!
