Salt Spring Conservancy and Two Great Resources

Last night I went to a celebration of the Salt Spring Island Conservancy. Some great things have happened over the past year including the preservation of two approximately 18 acre parcels on the island ‘in perpetuity’. The focus of the night was Connecting Children & Nature and on celebrating successes and planning for the future.

The Children’s Earth Choir performed some wonderful songs (so adorable and heartfelt) and there was a talk by Dr. Bob Peart, a founding direction of The Land Conservancy, biologist and educator. He reminded us of the importance of getting our children (and ourselves) outside to play and to be outdoors – enjoying nature.

We also heard about an amazing project:
The Encyclopedia of Life – “an ambitious project to organize and make available via the Internet virtually all information about life present on Earth” – all about biodiversity.

Another new website, this one based in British Columbia is:
West Coast Climate Equity whose purpose is “to research and inform on the implications of climate change”. It is a wealth of information and links all about climate change and related topics, to inform and to generate discussions about solutions.
