A New Direction

I have been thinking about doing some weavings for the four directions. This week I had some time in the evenings to do some weaving and so I got started on what I had in mind.

This first weaving is for the West – Black – the ‘looks within’ place.

Looks within

I had a black warp that I needed to finish up – which was perfect – and so I gathered up all sorts of black yarns that I had, some things from the Treasure Bag and some fabric too and started weaving the West. One of the main yarns in this weaving is from Gaia’s Colours that I got at Samhain (summer’s end).

I also had some black fabric with a silver design on it and I love how it adds some sparkle. Another yarn was a Noro yarn that had black that gradually changed into turquoise and a bit of that slipped in. Some of the black yarns from the Treasure Bag pulled along other bits of treasure – so there are bits of colour here and there too.

Looks within

(Black is hard to photograph!)

Looks within

So, this is the start of a series “The Directions”, with the first piece being “West – Looks within”. This is also in honour of the teachings that I have received about the directions – west also being where the Thunder Clouds and Thunder Beings are and where adulthood is.

Happy Weaving,
Terri

I like the idea for this series..it seems fitting you’ve begun this project near the time of the New Moon, and that your first piece is dark.

    Looking forward to seeing more!

Good heavens – west signifying adulthood – I want to think/feel on that. The last photo with the ends hanging out of sight looks as if the weaving is rooted in the earth. Powerful! Thinking of working with black makes my hands tingle: I am opening more to the synthesia we are all said to possess. Did you experience this?

Hi Karen – different traditions have different symbolism for the directions – and different colours – but in the teachings of my understanding are – West is adult, North is elder, East is child and South is youth.

I love what you noticed about the ends looking rooted in the earth – when I went back to look at the photo – it just really jumped out at me very powerfully – I didn’t notice that in the taking.

    Happy Weaving,

Thanks Zann – I look forward to creating more pieces. It seems significant to me at this time to be weaving the directions.
