The Directions

My Saori weaving series “The Directions” is now up in a show in Ladysmith, BC on Vancouver Island. The show is already open daily, but the official opening and reception are on August 7 from 5-8 pm (details on the poster below). Sixteen artists from across Vancouver Island with various techniques and styles in fibre – I’m looking forward to seeing all the work together.

I now have all of The Directions banners together and hanging for the display. Here are a few photos taken just before I dropped them off for the show.

I love this one in the wind…

A birthday scarf and looking east

I took a break from weaving my Directions banners to weave a scarf for my mom’s birthday. When she was here last she chose a yarn that she wanted for the weft of the scarf – it was a beautiful Umaj sock yarn (merino wool and bamboo) from Gaia’s Colours. For the weft, I chose silk yarn from Treenway Silks which was great as I haven’t worked with silk before.

Here is the finished scarf…

It is so light and has a wonderful feel from the great yarns.

And now, I’m back to my Directions series with East/Yellow. East represents new beginnings, childhood and spring. The warp is wound and ready to go…

The next directions…

I have prepared my warps for the next two directions – East/Yellow and North/Red. I had them sitting on a table next to my loom and noticed that my mind must have been very focussed on these colours as I had bought tulips that were these colours too…

So, here are the warps, waiting to be put onto the loom…

The vase that the flowers are in is from the Blue Horse Gallery (our neighbours) and is one of Anna’s raku vases.

Well, I can’t wait to get the next warp on the loom and get started and see where it takes me.

South (more photos)

Now I have completed the South banner of “The Directions” series and Alan has taken some great photos for me again! It continues to be interesting to explore weaving in one colour.

The Directions - South

Though the one colour turns out to be anything but.

It gives me a chance to explore more subtle variations in tone and colour and to also explore texture in a different way.

The Directions - South

South is the warm winds and the time of youth – all represented by the colour white.

The West (more photos)

Well, on my last post I put some photos of my new “Directions” banner – West. I found it difficult to get a good photo of the black in the banner. Alan has taken some new photos for me – and I must say that I love them. I think that you will get a better idea of the colours and textures with these photos.

and a touch of springtime too…

I was so pleased to get these great photos – thank you Alan. For more on the banner, please see my previous post here.

A New Direction

I have been thinking about doing some weavings for the four directions. This week I had some time in the evenings to do some weaving and so I got started on what I had in mind.

This first weaving is for the West – Black – the ‘looks within’ place.

Looks within

I had a black warp that I needed to finish up – which was perfect – and so I gathered up all sorts of black yarns that I had, some things from the Treasure Bag and some fabric too and started weaving the West. One of the main yarns in this weaving is from Gaia’s Colours that I got at Samhain (summer’s end).

I also had some black fabric with a silver design on it and I love how it adds some sparkle. Another yarn was a Noro yarn that had black that gradually changed into turquoise and a bit of that slipped in. Some of the black yarns from the Treasure Bag pulled along other bits of treasure – so there are bits of colour here and there too.

Looks within

(Black is hard to photograph!)

Looks within

So, this is the start of a series “The Directions”, with the first piece being “West – Looks within”. This is also in honour of the teachings that I have received about the directions – west also being where the Thunder Clouds and Thunder Beings are and where adulthood is.
